What is Tantra?

Exploring the Tradition of Tantra: The Role of Sound and Singing Bowls in Achieving Self-actualization.

TANTRA is a complex and ancient spiritual tradition that originated in South Asia thousands of years ago. Its teachings and practices are based on the idea that everything in the universe is interconnected and that the ultimate goal of life is to achieve spiritual enlightenment through the union of individual consciousness with the divine consciousness.

The word "tantra" is derived from the Sanskrit word "tantram," which means "loom" or "weave." This is the primal understanding for the practice of tantra, which involves weaving together various spiritual and physical practices to create a unified whole. The act of weaving embodies here the inter-connection of everything that exist.

According to the tantric tradition, there are certain sounds, known as "mantras," that have a profound effect on the human consciousness. These mantras are believed to have been revealed to ancient sages through deep meditation and are used in various tantric rituals to evoke specific energies and states of consciousness. Sound is believed to be a powerful tool for achieving spiritual awakening. In tantra, sound is seen as a manifestation of the divine weaving our entire universe, and chanting and other vocalisations are used to connect with this divine energy.

In addition to vocalisations, tantric practises also involve the use of various instruments to create sound vibrations that are believed to have a therapeutic and transformative effect on the body and mind. Singing bowls, for example, are a common instrument used in tantric meditation and healing practices. These bowls are made of metal and are played by striking them with a mallet or rubbing them with a wooden stick. The resulting sound vibrations are believed to balance the chakras (energy centers in the body), and aid in the release of emotional and energetic blockages.
